Myanmar became the first team in the 2017 KL SEA Games football event to confirm their place in the semi-final stage of the competition after whopping Brunei 6-0 in a match played at UiTM Stadium on Friday evening.
It was the third win on the trot for Gerd Zeise's team and the nine points gained secures their place in the next stage of the competition. Myanmar confirmed their place in some style as they ran riot over a hapless Brunei side.
Aung Thu and Si Thu Aung had given them a 2-0 lead at half time before Aung Kaung Mann (2), Mg Mg Lwin and Than Paing chip in with efforts of their own in a match that was hardly affected by the heavy rain that started just after the second half had kicked off.
In the other match that was played on Friday, Singapore got their first points of the competition as they defeated Laos 2-0 at Selayang Stadium. Taufik Suparno and Hanafi Akbar scored one each before 15 minutes had elapsed and that turned out to be the final score.
With the result, Singapore now sit in 3rd spot, three points behind Malaysia with only one match left to play. Which means that one single point is the minimum that Malaysia need to join Myanmar in the last four of the competition.
Malaysia will next take on Myanmar on Aug 21 with Brunei and Laos facing each other in the other Group A fixture.
