Commenting on his team's 3-0 defeat to Thailand U23 on Friday, Malaysia U23 head coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee has chalked the defeat up to his players' lack of confidence against the South East Asian giants.

In their second Group H match of the U23 AFC Championship qualifiers that was held at the National Stadium, Bangkok, Chenrop Samphaodi scored two goals for the hosts; in the 25th minute and the first half injury time, before Picha U-Tra added their third in the 87th minute.

"We know the quality possessed by Thailand, when they could swap six players in the starting line-up and were still able to play well.

"But my boys showed too much respect for Thailand and gave them too much space. The second goal, in the first half additional time killed off our chances of coming back into the match," said Ong after the match.

However, Ong said that their qualification hopes still remain despite the trouncing, as long as the Young Tigers are able to avoid losing to Mongolia U23 in their last group match this Sunday.

"We still can qualify for the finals as long as we do not lose to Mongolia in the last group match. But it also depends on the results of other matches.

"It's a complicated situation. We can still qualify automatically as the group winners, or as one of the top five second-placed teams, but we can also finish in bottom place if we lost to Mongolia," pointed out the former Malaysia senior team head coach.
