Chiefs' versatile defender stressed the importance of keeping up with the league title contenders in the second round

Kaizer Chiefs defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele has explained why their next three Premier Soccer League (PSL) matches will be difficult.

Amakhosi ended the PSL first round with two impressive consecutive victories which saw them climb up to fourth on the league standings.

Steve Komphela's men will now take on  Free State Stars, Maritzburg United and Highlands Park in their first three league games of the second round.

"Having finished the first round on a high note, that means we have to go all out for invaluable points in our first three games of the second round," Mphahlele told Vodacom Soccer.

"Yes, our first three games against Free State, Maritzburg and Highlands (Park) won't be the easy games at all," the 26-year-old continued.

"Free State and Highlands are fighting to move away from the relegation zone, while, on the other hand, Maritzburg are fighting to maintain their top-eight berth.

Fourth-placed Chiefs have accumulated 24 points from 15 league matches. They are a point behind log leaders SuperSport United, who have played 14 games.

"It will be crucial for us to fight with our utmost to keep up with the league title contenders, because mathematically every team in the top-eight zone still has a chance to challenge for league championship," he concluded.

Chiefs are scheduled to host Stars at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on February 7 as PSL action resumes.
