Moosa on Brockie, Nxumalo and Sundowns transfer targets

Masandawana may have suffered defeat just before the break, but their former player still remains highly optimistic

Mamelodi Sundows legend Zane Moosa believes that the Tshwane giants are in pole position for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title despite the league having only reached its half way point.

Prior to the Christmas break, Masandawana had been in impressive form overcoming everyone in their way and were even in a position to run away with the league had it not been for Cape Town City who stalled Sundowns’ progression.

Nonetheless, with the January transfer window set to reopen in the coming days, there has been much buzz surrounding new additions at Chloorkop as the club look make an even stronger statement.

While Sundowns are reportedly keen on bringing in several new faces with Leonardo Castro having left the club and the future of Khama Billiat still uncertain, a former Sundowns attacker believes that the Brazilians do not need to temper too much with the squad in January, but will welcome the introduction of another striker.

“You look at the league and they (Sundowns) are still the team that have scored the most goals,” Moosa told Goal.

“There are games where they maybe don’t take their chances.  I think Sundowns will always look to improve their squad but they will look for the right player, maybe a striker.

“Maybe Pitso (Mosimane) will feel he needs another striker in case of any injuries to the likes of Percy Tau. Maybe they are searching for a prolific striker, but other than that, I think they still have enough depth in their squad. I don’t think they will need to (temper) with the squad too much,” he added.

Moosa though, does not feel that Sundowns should rush into the decision of adding another striker to their ranks, but instead says that they should give it careful thought. Sundowns have in the past been linked with a move for Jeremy Brockie, a player who is admired by Sundowns’ mentor and most recently Ajax Cape Town’s wantaway striker Prince Nxumalo.

“I don’t think it’s a must to get a striker, I think they’ll take their time in terms of finding the right type of player who can obviously fit into the Sundowns way of doing things. Pitso knows what he’s doing and what kind of players he is looking for,” Moosa explains.

“I don’t know locally if there is anyone available because if there is it is not easy. There isn’t many (good strikers) available.

“He (Brockie) is a player who knows how to put the ball in the net, that’s his strength. He is good in the air and he can shoot with both feet. If Sundowns manage to get him, I think he can be a player who can be an asset to any team.

“Nxumalo, is also a player who has shown in the past that he has good quality so maybe Sundowns could go for either of them,” he said.

Meanwhile, the 49-year-old is adamant that Sundowns are the favourites to lift the title come the end of the season.

“Sundowns at this point are obvious favourites,” he said.

“Benni (McCarthy) has done very well with Cape Town City. They have kept themselves in the running, But Sundowns are a team who can always put a run together. They look to be strong favourites.

“Sundowns look like they will win the title because they are able to be consistent. Many teams have not been able to achieve that. Although, like I said Cape Town City are a team who are doing well and I thought SuperSport United would be a team who in the running but results haven’t been going their way,” he concluded.
