Mokoena: Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City target Pienaar has huge role to play in PSL

The former Bafana captain believes that Pienaar's experience would come in handy in the PSL

Bafana Bafana legend Aaron Mokoena says players who come back to the PSL after spending time in top European leagues have a huge role to play in local football.

The retired defender turned out for Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam, Belgian outfit KRC Genk, English clubs Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth, before returning home to play for Bidvest Wits in 2012.

Mokoena was referring mainly to fellow former Bafana captain Steven Pienaar, who has been linked with Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City after parting ways with English side Sunderland AFC last month.

“We have been blessed by gaining domestic and international experience. We need to be given that opportunity when we come back home,” Mokoena told City Press.

“If you look at what Benni [McCarthy] did when he came back from Europe and played for Orlando Pirates, you will understand why Steven has a lot to offer," he continued.

“The return of Steven will help in terms of ploughing back and helping inexperienced players," he concluded.

McCarthy, who joined Pirates after leaving English outfit West Ham United in 2011, won three major titles with the Soweto giants during the 2011/12 campaign.
