New to the MLS All-Star Game? Here's what you need to know...

What is the MLS All-Star Game?

The MLS All-Star Game is an annual match that sees the best players in MLS form a single team to take on a high-profile opponent, which this year is Real Madrid.

Madrid are 10/11 to win La Liga

In the other four major North American leagues, the All-Star Game is contested exclusively by players from within the league. Those leagues are all split into two divisions (such as the NBA's Eastern and Western Conference), and the top players from each division play each other in a one-off exhibition match once a year.

MLS do it differently, though, by inviting a big-name foreign team to take on their stars.

Who is in the MLS All-Star team?

David Villa, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Kaka and Sebastian Giovinco will all be recognisable names to European fans.

The first 11 players were picked through a fan vote, with supporters directly selecting 10 players and electing an 11th - Giovinco - by playing FIFA 17. The MLS player who scored the most goals on the game during the voting period completed the 'Fan XI'.

From there, All-Star Game coach Veljko Paunovic - who manages the Chicago Fire - selected the rest of the squad with the exception of the two picks made by MLS commissioner Don Garber (Dom Dwyer and Kellyn Acosta).

Where will the All-Star Game be played?

This year's All-Star Game will be played in Chicago. They have their own MLS team - the Chicago Fire, who play at Toyota Park - but the game will be played at Soldier Field, the home stadium of the NFL's Chicago Bears, to accommodate the demand for tickets.

Who are the best MLS players?

Of the big names, Villa and Giovinco remain two of the league's top players and Schweinsteiger has had an immediate impact in Chicago, helping to transform them from MLS's worst team in 2016 to one of its best this year.

Beyond them, watch out for Atlanta United playmaker Miguel Almiron and Chicago striker Nemanja Nikolic, both of whom are having sensational first seasons in North America.
