Mexico draws Portugal, Russia and New Zealand in Confederations Cup

El Tri will open the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia against Cristiano Ronaldo and the Euro 2016 champions.

Mexico will face Portugal, New Zealand and Russia in Group A of the 2017 Confederations Cup after the tournament draw was held Saturday.

El Tri open the tournament in Russia against Cristiano Ronaldo and the European champions June 18 in Kazan. Juan Carlos Osorio's men then travel to Sochi to face Oceania champion New Zealand on June 21 before returning to Kazan to close the group stage against the host nation June 24.

World Cup champion Germany, Asian Cup winner Australia and Copa America champion Chile were drawn into Group B, which also will feature the winner of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

Mexico, which qualified by winning the 2015 Gold Cup and then defeating the United States in a Confederations Cup playoff, will travel to Russia after playing World Cup qualifiers against Honduras on June 7 or 8 and the U.S. on June 11 or 12.
