The defender has had to wait 750 days for another goal in Ligue 1, but did enough to dent Saint-Etienne's European hopes this weekend

Mozambique defender Mexer scored his first Ligue 1 goal in two years when he headed the equaliser in Rennes’ 1-1 draw at Saint-Etienne on Sunday.

The 28-year-old nodded home Yoann Gourcuff’s 44th-minute corner to cancel out Robert Beric's strike for his first Ligue 1 goal since last scoring on the 4th of April 2015.

This clash was played behind closed doors as punishment for Saint-Etienne in the wake of incidents at their derby win against Olympique Lyonnais earlier this season, but a group of ASSE hooligans broke into the stadium, forcing a delay.

Les Verts have won just once in eight league games now and their hopes of competing in European football again next campaign are fading; they currently lie in seventh, nine points away from Bordeaux, who currently occupy the last European football spot.

Mexer last featured for Os Mambas in September last year but given his form - which has seen him notch up 16 appearances so far this term - he will be hoping to hit the ground running when Mozambique return to competition later this year.
