McCarthy: Mathoho is not the only one underperforming at Kaizer Chiefs

Goal spoke to the former Amakhosi defender about Mathoho, who has been heavily criticized in recent times

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy says Eric Mathoho cannot be blamed for the team’s struggles.

“Look, I think injuries and suspension are all you need to look at as contributing factors to his performances, but if the team is not doing well most of its top players will fall under that spell,” McCarthy told Goal.

Amakhosi are winless in their last four league matches - having suffered three defeats and one draw.

“To judge a player when the team is not doing well is a bit unfair because when the team is doing well such players are also doing well,” he said.

“I mean, you cannot single out Mathoho’s performance. He is not playing alone. So, it’s a question of his individual performance which has been affected by injuries and suspensions,” McCarthy concluded.

A section of football fans believes that Mathoho has been underperforming since Tefu Mashamaite left Chiefs two seasons ago.
