McCarthy: Kaizer Chiefs can play three men at the back

Comments
McCarthy believes that the Amakhosi are adept at playing a three-man defence, as they have done so on a few occasions this season

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy tells Goal that Eric Mathoho, Lorenzo Gordinho and Daniel Cardoso can play together in a three-man defence.

“Look, they can work. You know what is the hardest part? To find a combination that will work for you. A combination that will work for the team.

“A combination that will be guiding the guys in front of them and on the side of them. A combination that will be on the same par with (Itumeleng) Khune,” McCarthy told Goal.

The Vryburg-born former player believes that any player should be able to adapt with whoever he is paired with for the benefit of the team.

During his playing days, McCarthy conceded that he was able to play with any player at Amakhosi, be it Patrick Mabedi, Patrick Mayo, Cyril Nzama or any other player for that matter.

“We were also chopping and changing the defence. I was playing with Mabedi most of the time. Then I was playing with Mayo, Bevan Fransman on the left, David Kannemeyer also on the left, Cyril Nzama at right-back and sometimes at centre-back.

“David Obua at left-back. It’s just that I think the central pairing and the goalkeeper was consistent. The understanding was there and everything just fell into place and the rest of the guys were just doing their jobs,” McCarthy said.
