Liverpool have endured a tough opening to 2017, with it far from a Happy New Year for those on the red half of Merseyside.
The Anfield outfit are enduring their worst start to a calendar year since 1993, with just one win collected in eight outings.
The most recent of those saw them crash out of the FA Cup, with Championship side Wolves claiming a notable scalp in a 2-1 win.
Jurgen Klopp’s out-of-sorts squad have also suffered home reversals against Southampton and Swansea City in recent weeks, with Plymouth Argyle the only side they have beaten this year.
Having plumbed new depths on Sunday, Liverpool found themselves cast as a figure of fun on social media.
Klopp’s claims that the weather played a part in an EFL Cup defeat to the Saints have come back to haunt him once again, while the announcement that club legend Steven Gerrard is to return in a coaching capacity suddenly appears to be terribly timed.

Liverpool should sack Gerrard. Every since he came back they've been on a slippy slope.

Funny how Liverpool have slipped out of two competitions since Gerrard returned to the club. — Chelsea HQ (@Chelsea_HQ) January 28, 2017
Don't get Klopp playing his reserves with no European football. Shows a lack of knowledge of the depth in English football and respect. — Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) January 28, 2017
Alberto Moreno and Ragnar Klavan were among those to attract the most criticism for their respective displays.
Coutinho is coming on. But Moreno is still on, too. So… well… — Chris Bascombe (@_ChrisBascombe) January 28, 2017
Klavan is an absolute calamity for Liverpool— Matt Sankey (@SankMtfc) January 28, 2017
Some, though, were happy to bury their head in the sand.
Things are not about to get any easier for Liverpool, though, with Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal to come in their next three home games.
