Cliff Nyakeya powered home the all important goal and Ali now insists young players in the side have started to gel

Mathare United coach Salim Ali believes his young charges have proved doubters wrong after they ended a seven year wait to beat Gor Mahia on Sunday.

Salim, who was in charge for the third game in a row as head coach Francis Kimanzi continued serving a one month suspension, named a youthful starting eleven to take on the record Kenyan Premier League champions and the pre-match talk was hinged around his team selection.

Cliff Nyakeya powered home the all important goal for the ‘Slum Boys’ and Ali now insists the young players in the side have started to gel in well. “We made that mistake (conceding early) in our previous matches but we have corrected it in training. Against Chemelil Sugar there was an improvement but today there was a really big improvement because of the quality of the opponent,” Salim told the club’s website.

"It was not really about defending. It's about playing tactics. We brought Martin Ongori to deal with Walusimbi on the left and Tyson Odhiambo to help David Mwangi in defending against Innocent Wafula. We knew if we locked them out from the flanks we could get something from the match.”

Ali explained that the win will motivate the young players to perform even better in future matches. "It is this type of match that helps you gauge the development of your players. The young players were motivated by facing a big team and this win is very important for their morale. It shows we are making steps.”
