The England defender, linked with a move to both Manchester United and Manchester City in the summer, is now facing a race against time to be fit

Tottenham full-back Danny Rose may miss the start of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign after the club confirmed he had exploratory surgery on his left knee.

Rose, widely linked with a summer move to either Manchester United or Manchester City, had returned to Spurs training in the week but was forced to go under the knife as the problem resurfaced.

It was hoped the England international would return to fitness ahead of the club's final ever game at White Hart Lane on Sunday, against Jose Mourinho's United, but he did not play a part.

Rose has established himself as one of the most valuable full-backs in the Premier League this term under Mauricio Pochettino, impressing in his 18 top-flight appearances.

The 26-year-old also made three Champions League outings and has tipped for a big-money move at the end of the season as both Mourinho and Pep Guardiola look to shuffle their full-back options.

Fellow Spurs defender Kyle Walker has also been mooted as an option for the Manchester sides, after he seemingly lost an internal power struggle between himself and Pochettino.

Walker has been left out of Pochettino's starting XI in a number of league games in recent weeks and is said to be open to a move to either the Etihad or Old Trafford once the transfer market re-opens.
