Malaysia U18's momentum in the AFF U-18 Championship finally ran out of steam as Thailand emerged as tournament winners

The Malaysia Under-18 team suffered the same fate as their more senior compatriot in the SEA Games, losing to Thailand in the tournament final as a 2-0 score gave the War Elephants the AFF U-18 Championships.

Bojan Hodak's team had been unbeaten throughout the tournament leading up to the final, which included a 1-1 draw against Thailand. However, the Thais came out trumps in the second meeting.

A period of lapse of concentration at the start of the second half put paid to Malaysia's hope of winning the tournament. Ekanit Panya and Kritsada Kaman scored in the 48th and 51st minute respectively and that proved to be enough to hand Malaysia their first defeat of the tournament.

Despite having a man advantage with 20 minutes left to be played after Wudtichai Kumkeam had been sent off for a second yellow card offence, Malaysia still could not find their way back into the match.

Hodak's side had reached the final after defeating host Myanmar 5-4 on penalties after both teams couldn't be separated in normal time. Malaysia advanced to the knockout stage by virtue of finishing top of Group A with four wins and one draw.
