At long last, Liverpool appear to have found rhythm in the Premier League this season. They are currently enjoying their best spell in 2017, winning back-to-back games and hanging onto an enthralling 1-1 draw away to Manchester City.
It’s with this new momentum that Jürgen Klopp’s team prepare to host Everton for the second Merseyside derby of the season, for which the Reds are narrow favourites.
Everton haven’t won a Premier League match at Anfield since the 1999-2000 season. Since then, Liverpool hold the record of the longest undefeated streak at home for a derby game – a feat extending to 16 matches.
The visitors will be hoping to end that run after two consecutive wins – a 3-0 hammering of West Brom, before winning 4-0 against Hull City.
Ronald Koeman’s side, however, will take the one-mile journey across Stanley Park without influential wing-back Seamus Coleman, who is out for the rest of the season after breaking his leg on International duty.
Everton have not beaten Liverpool at all in the Premier League since the 2010-11 season, but a win for them now could boost their narrow chances of Champions League qualification – which is also the focus for fourth-placed Liverpool.
The hosts will need to keep an eye on Romelu Lukaku, who has 21 goals in 28 games this season. He has netted five goals against Liverpool, however, he’s scored just once at Anfield.
The Reds already picked up a win in the reverse fixture back in December courtesy of a 94th-minute winner from Sadio Mane.
The last time they did a season double over Everton was in the 2011-12 season, with a goal each by Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll at Goodison Park, and a Steven Gerrard hat-trick at home.
Klopp would become the first Liverpool manager to have won his first three Merseyside derbies if they emerge victorious this Saturday.
