KPL: No prize money for Gor Mahia v AFC Leopards derby

K’Ogalo will lock horns with the GOtv Shield winners in the KPL curtain raiser and the first ‘Mashemeji’ derby of 2018 season

The Super Cup clash between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards will have no cash rewards for the winners.

Kenyan Premier League CEO Jack Oguda has confirmed to Goal that the winners will only receive medals and the trophy after the league body missed out on securing a new sponsor for the curtain raiser.

“We did our best to secure a sponsor but it all went in vain. We will only reward the winning team with medals and the trophy.”

SportPesa were the official sponsors of KPL but pulled out in January to protest decision by the Kenyan government to implement the 35 percent taxing on all gaming companies.

Oguda said they had discussed with the clubs on the situation at hand and explained to them what to expect during the final at Afraha Stadium.

“The clubs have no problem. They understand the situation we found ourselves in and we are working hard to bring a new sponsor on board so as to avoid such scenes next year.”

Previously the winner of the Super Cup, when it was sponsored by pay TV channel SuperSport, was rewarded with medals, trophy and Sh750, 000 with runners up bagging Sh500, 000.

Local television channel KTN has secured rights to broadcast the match live on Sunday.
