Konadu plays down Ghana's chances on Wafu Cup

The Black Stars began the group stage of the Wafu Cup on a high note but their coach does not want the team to be burdened by expectations

Ghana coach Maxwell Konadu believes it's too early to label his side as the favourites to annex the 2017 Wafu Cup despite hosting the competition.

The Black defeated Guinea 2-0 in the first game of Group A to sit top, two points above Nigeria and Mali who shared the spoils goalless in the other game.

Although, majority of Ghanaians have regained faith in the Black Stars after the impressive performance, Konadu does not want his players to be burdened with the tag of favourites despite having no doubts that Ghana can do well in the competition

"The players did well and you can notice that there was no pressure on them as compared to the Gambia game. They improved and I am happy with the victory over Guinea because it gives us a good start in the group," Konadu said.

"Talking of winning the tournament at this time, I think it's early days yet. We have a couple of matches to play before we will know if we've achieved our aim or not.

"We spoke to the players one-on-one before the match and did a lot of practice with them especially those who were playing in unfamiliar positions and they perfectly executed the game plan. Seeing Abbey [Thomas] win the valuable player should tell you the work we put in this game. This will not be the last time you will see players in unfamiliar position because we registered only 18 players and we have to play matches every two days," he added.

Ghana will play Mali in the next game on Saturday and will book their place in the semi-finals should they pick a win.
