The Real Madrid defender wants to surpass the goalkeeper, while he feels La Roja are on target for a strong performance at Russia 2018

Sergio Ramos wants to be Spain’s record caps holder after reaching the 150-appearance milestone on Friday, and he says that he has Iker Casillas “shaking” in his boots.

The centre-back turned out for La Roja in their 1-1 draw against Germany in Dusseldorf to reach the achievement but still lies someway short of the goalkeeper’s record of 167.

While the Real Madrid ace accepts the iconic shot-stopper will be tough to catch, he has him firmly in his sights.

“Iker is shaking already!” Ramos declared after Friday’s fixture. “His figure is going to be difficult to beat. I’m proud to get here and I’m not going to throw in the towel.”

The 31-year-old has enjoyed remarkable success with the national side, winning two European Championship crowns, as well as the 2010 World Cup.

The experienced campaigner reflected upon his side’s performance at the ESPRIT Arena, stating it was a good warm up for what is to come.

“It was a great match for fans of football,” he said. “We played a very complete first half, with great energy, which was necessary against the team that we were playing. It’s obvious that they are one of the favourites to win the World Cup.”

Spain’s next challenge is a home fixture against Argentina on Tuesday, which will be played in Madrid.
