ISL 2017: Rinus Michel’s student Wim Suurbier oversaw Kerala Blasters’ pre-season

Kerala Blasters had the fortune of Wim Suurbier playing the role of an observer during their pre-season stint in Spain last month.

The 72-year-old played a mentor’s role to Rene Meulensteen earlier in his career and it is on the latter’s request that Suurbier joined the Blasters’ camp.

“He was an observer and suggested a few things as and when required. We will invite him for one of the home matches this season,” informed a Kerala Blasters official.

For those unaware, Suurbier was part of the legendary Ajax FC team which was coached by Rinus Michels, one of the finest proponents of Total Football.

At Ajax, he won three European Cups and seven Eredivisie titles. He was part of the Netherlands team which twice finished runners-up in the 1974 and 1978 World Cup.
