ISL 2017-18: Kerala Blasters coach David James - Dimitar Berbatov looked fantastic in training

James refused to discuss transfer rumours but hinted that Dimitar Berbatov is back in contention to start a must-win game against Pune City...

Kerala Blasters head coach David James is focused on dealing with one game at a time as his team prepares to take on Pune City on Friday.

"The defeat to Goa was tough, it left us in a position where we have to win six games in a row. It was again a tough performance against Delhi because we lost a player just before the bus departed. It was a confident performance, one step closer to the six wins," said James.

Pune's goalkeeper Vishal Kaith has put in impressive shifts in between the sticks for his club this season but David James has identified areas of his game that Blasters can take advantage of.

"He (Vishal Kaith) is a talented young man. There are certain things he is good at and certain things that we will try to take an advantage of."

James confirmed that star striker Dimitar Berbatov has regained his fitness, saying, "Berbatov looked fantastic training". However, the coach refused to speak about potential new recruits and even put in a hilarious response when he was pressed on about rumours linking Blasters with Brazilian striker Nilmar.

"We are after Neymar, a bit of contractual issue there, something to do with 500 million! (laughs). The transfer window is still open. I am not at liberty to say who we are targeting," said James.

David James has had an indifferent start to his second stint at the Kochi-based club after taking over from Rene Meulensteen in January. And to add to the difficulty of taking over a team mid-way through the season, James was left with only Thangboi Singto to work with when he first came in.

"As a fan, I was encouraged by what I saw before I came in. I was left with one member of coaching staff in Thangboi. The people I have brought in are people I trusted," concluded James.
