I-League: Proposal to increase the number of foreign players opposed by several clubs

On 29th June, representatives of the I-League clubs sat down with officials from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to discuss the implementation of the upcoming 2017-18 I-League season while the medium and long term roadmap of the Indian football is yet to be finalised with the guidance and recommendations of the Asian Football Confederation.

The meeting which comprised Subrata Dutta (Chairman League Committee), Kushal Das (General Secretary, AIFF) and Sunando Dhar (CEO, I-League), saw the clubs demanding changes in the rules for registering foreign players. The clubs had requested for permission to register eight overseas players which would include two players of Asian origin. Furthermore, the clubs should be allowed to field a maximum of five foreign players including one player of Asian origin in their playing eleven, requested the franchises.

However, it is believed that Kolkata heavyweights- Mohun Bagan and East Bengal are the only two clubs in favour of the proposal. Other clubs, namely North India outfit Minerva Punjab, newly promoted side NEROCA FC, reigning champions Aizawl and Rohit Ramesh-owned outfit Chennai City are against this plan.

Irrespective of the response, the proposal has been carried forward and will be put forth for consideration of the League Committee on 5th July. The meeting will be held at Kolkata.
