I-League: Penn Orji set to replace Sony Norde at Mohun Bagan

Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan are set to sign Nigerian play-maker Penn Orji after parting ways with their star foreigner Sony Norde due to an injury problem.

The two parties have already agreed terms and a source close to the development informed that the player may take the field against his former side Shillong Lajong on 3rd February 2017.

Orji, who shot to fame during his debut season for JCT in the I-League, had a memorable three-year stint under Trevor James Morgan in East Bengal and went on to join cross-city rivals Mohammedan Sporting, where he was part of a star-studded side that got relegated after underperforming throughout the season.

Co-incidentally, Penn was part of the club's IFA Shield winning squad in 2013-14, the very competition which made Sony Norde a known face in Indian football as he starred for Bangladeshi side Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi.

A player who was known more for his peripheral vision on the ball than his scoring ability, Penn had also made 13 appearances for Kerala Blasters in the first edition of Indian Super League (ISL) as part of the runners-up squad.

According to the source, Penn had been playing for Fabryczny Klub Sportowy Stal Kraśnik - a club that plies its trade in the fourth division of Polish football.

During his heydays, Penn was one of the best number 10's in Indian football, but it remains to be seen how match-fit he is and whether he can help the Mariners orchestrate a turnaround after a rough patch of results by filling the large void left by Sony.
