Mashaba has opened up his tenure as Bafana head coach following his departure from the national team

Former South Africa coach Shakes Mashaba has admitted that he felt insulted by Kermit Erasmus' comment on Twitter.

The current Stade Rennais F.C striker tweeted that he was not a back-up player for the national team during Mashaba's tenure as the Bafana coach.

“I mean, it’s an insult to hear a player say; ‘I’m not a back-up player’. I nearly blew my casket when I heard that the player had said that, and some of the officials and media entertained that rather than calling the player to order,” Mashaba told Power FM Sport.

While still playing for Orlando Pirates, Erasmus stated he would not honour a call-up for their opening 2015 Afcon qualifier against Gambia as a replacement for Tokelo Rantie, who was getting married on the day of the clash.

“We called him up to the national team. We assessed him, but after that we realised we were not getting what we had expected of him,” he said.

Mashaba is disappointed that Safa officials did not call Erasmus to order, but instead they supported his stance and somewhat arrogance displayed on that occasion.

“They were ululating about it and saying; ‘You told him the right thing’. Nobody has the right to insult the national team like that," he stressed.

"It killed me to hear a player say that 'I am not a back-up player', in the national team nogal. You know, when a player gets a call-up, they drop everything (and honour the call-up),” Mashaba concluded.
