Bidvest Wits will not release starlet Phakamani Mahlambi for the 2017 U20 Afcon finals as he is an integral part of the team

Bidvest Wits head coach Gavin Hunt has confirmed he will not release Phakamani Mahlambi for the 2017 Under-20 African Cup of Nations Cup (Afcon) finals in Zambia.

The 19-year-old forward has been embroiled in a club versus country spat after Wits refused to allow the player to attend an  Amajita training camp that was held last week.

Hunt’s latest comments will only further increase the animosity between the two parties.

In an interview on Power FM, the 52-year-old coach said they would not release their rising star as he is an integral part of their first team.

“Out of all the players that have been called up no one plays in the first team apart from Mahlambi so you tell me what to do,” Hunt told Power FM.

The coach, further went on to express his belief that Mahlambi should already be within the Bafana Bafana setup rather than playing for the country’s junior sides.

“The boy (Mahlambi) should be playing for Bafana anyway, that’s my opinion," he said.

When asked about other Wits players who did not attend the training camp despite not being part of the first team.

The former Matsatsantsa tactician cited that there was a lack of communication between the South African Football Association (Safa) and the club.

“If the players were picked up they would have been released for camp,” said Hunt.
