Considering Reading and Huddersfield Town conceded just two goals between them over the course of four semi-final legs, strikers from both sides will need to be on top form if they are to make a breakthrough when they meet at Wembley for Monday’s Championship play-off final.
Top scorers for the Terriers with 10 and 12 league goals respectively, Nahki Wells and Elias Kachunga are Betfair Sportsbook’s joint 9/2 (5.50) favourites to open the scoring in the capital, and on offer at 19/10 (2.90) to strike anytime.
However, given that Wells has scored just once in the last 19 matches and Kachunga only twice in the previous 15, the greater threat seems likely to be found at the other end of the pitch.
The Frenchman has certainly carried the majority of the goal-scoring burden for the Royals this season, with fellow striker Lewis Grabban at 14/5 (3.80) having found the net just three times in 18 appearances since joining on loan from Bournemouth in January.
Despite grabbing nine goals this campaign, winger Garath McCleary at 14/5 (3.80) may have to make do for a place on the bench yet again after Stam’s successful switch to a 3-4-3 system in the semi-final victory over Fulham.
With nine goals to his name from midfield, Jonathan Swift at 3/1 (4.00) offers another outlet for Reading in what promises to be a tight match.
Similarly, David Wagner will be hoping to see his supporting players come to the aid of Wells and Kachunga in front of goal, with Isaiah Brown in particular capable of providing a threat.
The England youth international has impressed since joining on loan from Chelsea in January, and can be backed at 5/2 (3.50) to score a fifth of the season for Huddersfield, while, Rajiv Van La Parra is a 7/2 (4.50) shot to get on the scoresheet from the wing.
