The Lions of the North have beefed up their squad in their quest to avoid relegation and have released six players in the process

Relegation-threatened Highlands Park have announced the signing of striker Moeketsi Sekola from Free State Stars as well as Bidvest Wits defender Siyabonga Nhlapho on loan until the end of the season.

The two players appeared to have fallen down the pecking order at their respective clubs over the past six months, and coach Gordon Igesund jumped at the opportunity to sign them for the Tembisa-based side.

Meanwhile, the club parted ways with no less than six players as they prepare for the second half of the season.

They include veteran defender Jermain Christian, Augustine Leonard, Teboho Kalake, Simphiwe Tshabalala, Thapelo Mathibe and Jose Garcia, who has since joined Baroka FC.

Sitting second from bottom on the PSL standings, the Lions of the North have an abysmal record to date and are strong candidates for relegation.

They have only two league wins to their name and boast the worst defensive record having conceded 29 goals after 15 league matches played.

Igesund's charges will resume the 2016/17 PSL season away to Cape Town City on February 7.
