Now showing an added maturity and extra bite to his game, the 27-year-old is considered to be one of the finest holding midfielders in the Premier League.

He is also experienced enough to be viewed as an on-field leader, but Herrera is reluctant to speculate on a possible inheriting of the armband with others still ahead of him in the pecking order.

"It has been a surprise. I am very grateful that people value me like this but I don't think it is something that is going to happen soon.

“Being captain of Manchester United are big words. Look at the captains that this club have had. I am flattered and grateful but it is necessary to respect the time [that other players have been here] and the number of games [in which other players have featured].

“Furthermore, as at Madrid and Barcelona the captains are Spanish, it's also logical that there is an English captain [at Manchester United].

“I am grateful that people see me like that but I'd rather not think about it much."

Herrera has made 44 appearances in all competitions for United this season, with that tally marking a new high for him at the club following a £29 million transfer from Athletic Bilbao in 2014.
