The Black Stars' skipper says he was "impressed" with the contribution of the Atletico Madrid man in their first match at the Afcon

Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan is happy with the impact of midfielder Thomas Partey in Tuesday's victory over Uganda in their Africa Cup of Nations group opener.

The Atletico Madrid man was arguably Ghana's best man as the Black Stars picked up a 1-0 triumph at Stade de Port-Gentil, although Christian Atsu went home with the official Man of the Match accolade.

The 23-year-old, who has largely been on the fringes at Vicente Calderon, lasted the entire game.

“He [Partey] is a gifted footballer and I’m happy he plays for Ghana," Gyan told Happy FM .

“I was impressed with his output [on Tuesday] but not surprised because to play for one of the best teams in the world [Atletico Madrid], you need to possess something unique, which I believe he has.

"For someone who doesn’t get enough minutes for his club and comes to a big tournament like the Afcon, and put up such display, I think he’s on the right track.”

Partey's place in Ghana's starting set-up came at the expense of Torino midfielder Afriyie Acquah.

The Odumase-Krobo-born is expected to keep his place when the Black Stars face off against the Eagles of Mali on Saturday.
