Kakamega Homeboyz beat Naivas FC by a solitary goal in GOtv Shield first round clash played at Camp Toyoyo grounds on Saturday.
Ivorian Lamine Diallo came off the bench to score the lone goal three minutes after the hour mark. Diallo - who replaced Ali Bhai at the start of the second half, headed home fellow substitute Festo Omukoto’s cross from the right flank. Mike Mururi had lined up most of his fringe players as Naivas Coach Joseph Irungu fielded his strongest squad.
Michael Wanyika started in goal for Homeboyz while Keiphas Baraza led the attacking line. For Naivas, Hassan Rashid was the man deployed to search for goals upfront as Chege Ken manned the sticks. The division two side created numerous chances in the first half but were denied by an astute Homeboyz defence led by Charles Momanyi.
Two tactical changes on the Homeboyz side in the second half won it for the Kakamega-based side as they progressed to the next round. Meanwhile, several teams have already qualified for the round of 32. Nationwide Super League side Palos came from a goal down to put five past Griffins FC. Michael Owino, Alex Waiswa, Job Omuse and Suleiman's brace was all the Kisumu-based side needed to down their opponents, who scored first through Laban Otieno.
