Gordon explains why he was prepared to reject Chelsea interest

The Scotland international has committed to a new contract at Celtic as he is eager to play regularly and could not guarantee that at Stamford Bridge

Craig Gordon admits concerns over a lack of game time at Chelsea convinced him to reject interest from Stamford Bridge and sign a new contract at Celtic.

’Messi the worst & nearing the end’

The Scotland international emerged as a top target for the Blues during the January transfer window, with reports suggesting the Premier League leaders offered up to £3.5 million

Celtic, though, remained adamant that they had no intention of selling and that agreeing fresh terms with Gordon was their number one priority.

That deal has now been done, with the 34-year-old committing to a three-and-a-half-year extension, and the former Sunderland man insists he never gave serious thought to heading south of the border.

Gordon pens new Celtic contract

Gordon said in the Evening Times: “I’m playing. There is no guarantee of playing games down there. I could have done, I might not have done.

“The fact I’m playing, winning, having the opportunity to play in the Champions League and winning those matches, I was desperate to do it. That’s why I came here in the first place.

“I’ve had a little taste of it and I’d love to get back there and have some more. I’ve been to Sunderland and have played at most of the Premier League grounds, not that I’ve ticked it all off as it’s an incredible league.

"It was attractive, but at the same time, there was a lot going for the option to stay.

Begovic forced to stay at Chelsea

“As I didn’t ever have to make that decision, it never got to that point where I had to weigh it up one against the other.”

Chelsea were in the market for a new goalkeeper as Asmir Begovic was pushing for a move away from the club. He was eventually forced to stay put, amid interest from Bournemouth, but the issue may be assessed again over the summer when the transfer window re-opens.
