The ex-Nigeria U20 international was on hand to help his side to a morale-boosting victory over the Turkish giants

Alhaji Gero played a crucial role as Östersunds claimed a 2-0 home win over Galatasaray in a Uefa Europa League second round qualifying encounter on Thursday evening.

Although the visitors threatened severally in the first half of the game through Bafétimbi Gomis, the Swedish outfit stood firm.

And in the 58th minute, Gero came close to open the scoring when he flashed an effort across the face of goal.

Ten minutes later, Saman Ghoddos got the curtain raiser of the game off a free flowing move to give the hosts a one-goal lead.

Graham Potter’s men shrugged off the Turkey Lig 1 side’s advances and wrapped up the game in the closing stages of the encounter after Jamie Hopcutt - on for Gero as an 81st minute substitute - weaved past defenders to give the Jämtkraft Arena outfit a two-goal advantage heading into the second leg of the tie.

The former El Kanemi Warriors marksman was cautioned in the 18th minute. And he hopes to help his side seal progress to the next round of the Europa League qualifiers when they visit the Türk Telekom Stadıum for the return leg on July 20.
