Gareth Southgate World Cup 2018

Gareth Southgate net worth: England manager's salary, charity work & playing career profile

Gareth Southgate has emerged an increasingly popular figure at this summer's World Cup following his unexpected success in leading England to the tournament's semi-finals.

A breath of fresh air in a manager who decided to break tradition and name a young side to take to Russia, Southgate is the first England boss in a long time who appears to be affable, down to earth and genuine.

His waistcoats in Russia have also sparked somewhat of a fashion frenzy worldwide and he could very well be bringing the football home.

So how much does the England boss earn per year and what charities does he support? Goal takes a look.

What is Gareth Southgate's salary?

Southgate's salary as England manager reportedly earns him roughly £1.8 million ($2.4m) each year, having taking up the role in 2016 following Sam Allardyce's dismissal.

Prior to his duties as England boss, he led Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2009 and the England Under-21 side from 2013 to 2016.

Who was Southgate the footballer?

As a footballer, he played for Crystal Palace from 1988 to 1995 as a defender and midfielder, as well as Aston Villa from 1995 to 2001. He then finished his career at Middlesbrough from 2001 to 2006.

Southgate began his professional life with the Eagles and became club captain, eventually guiding them to a First Division trophy in 1994. After moving to Aston Villa in 1995, he featured in every league match in the 1998-99 season and also represented England in the 1998 World Cup in France as well as Euro 1996 and 2000.

A full England international, Southgate won 57 caps for the Three Lions, though his experiences with the national side are still tainted by missing a crucial penalty in the semi-final shootout of Euro '96 against Germany. Southgate's kick was saved, and England were eliminated from the tournament.

After moving to Middlesbrough in 2001, he won the League Cup in 2004 and competed in the UEFA Cup final – which was his last game as a footballer.

Following the announcement of his retirement as a player, he took over managerial duties at Middlesbrough in 2006, where he remained for three seasons. He then took over as England U21 coach from 2013 to 2016 before first becoming temporary of the senior England team in September 2016, and was officially named permanent manager as Allardyce's successor.

There is a poetic narrative to be found in England's last 16 victory over Colombia in the penalty shootout, which marked the first time the Three Lions won in such a manner after losing three in a row – and provides redemption for Southgate in his own spot kick misery.

What charity work does Southgate do?

Southgate is a Football Foundation Ambassador, an organisation who support the Football Foundation's commitment to building better community sports facilities across the county, which support the health of the nation – including its people, communities and economy.

He also lent his support to Team GB Olympic champion Adam Peaty and participated in his gruelling sport marathon charity challenge, which worked in tandem with Sporting Action charity – an organisation that raises money and awareness towards sport in Zambia.

The England manager supported former team-mate and ex-Crystal Palace captain Geoff Thomas, who was diagnosed with leukaemia, to help raise money in 2007 for research into the illness.

Southgate's Marks & Spencer waistcoats have been so popular that Bloodwise – a charity dedicated to funding research for blood cancer – have introduced a campaign where they encourage fans to wear their own waistcoat to work on Wednesday for the semi-final and donate to the cause.

Bloodwise's website stated: "Show your support for Gareth Southgate and the boys ahead of Wednesday’s semi-final showdown – and help give blood cancer the boot!

"In honour of the England boss’ new-found football fashionista status, we’re inviting supporters to grab a waistcoat and button up to beat blood cancer.

"Taking part is simple: proudly display one of our posters to encourage everyone to don their favourite armless attire, make a donation towards life-changing blood cancer research and get ready to celebrate as the Three Lions sail through to the finals."

What sponsorship deals does Southgate have?

While not their sole sponsor, Southgate's waistcoats courtesy of Marks & Spencer – who are sponsors of the England team this summer – have become hugely popular with fans.

The sight of Southgate sporting a traditional waistcoat in the England dugout has become a familiar one, and Marks & Spencer had reported that sales of the waistcoat increased by 35 per cent since he started wearing them.

What is Southgate's net worth?

Gareth Southgate's net worth is reported to be in the region of £9m ($12m).

He is some way beneath the highest-paid coaches in football, with Premier League champions Manchester City paying Pep Guardiola an £15m ($20m) salary, with an estimated net worth in excess of £30m ($40m).
