Free-scoring Jonathan Kodjia scores and limps off in Villa draw

Steve Bruce's men are now 11 points adrift of the top six with five games to play

Cote d’Ivoire attacker Jonathan Kodjia scored in Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw against Burton Albion in the Championship on Saturday but suffered an injury setback and was replaced after 36 minutes.

Burton’s comeback gave a glimmer of hope to their dreams of escaping relegation, although it's left Villa with a lot to do to make the playoffs.

The free-scoring Kodjia hobbled off having opened the scoring in the third minute for the Villans.

Saturday’s strik was the Ivorian's 19th of the season, and the West African is now one goal shy of equalling his entire goal tally from last season for the club [19 Championship goals, 1 FA Cup goal] in all competitions.

The former Bristol City man has scored eight goals in his last eight matches, ten overall since returning from the Nations Cup in Gabon in January, and moved to assuage fears about his fitness by issuing an optimistic fitness report after the match.

Kodjia’s recent form may well have prompted interest from the Premier League, with coach Steve Bruce conceding recently that he would not stand in the forward's way if one of the league's giants came in for him.
