The former president believes Appiah has the capabilities to manage the four-time African champions

Former Ghana president John Agyekum Kufuor has called on the football association to reappoint Kwesi Appiah as coach of the Black Stars.

The football governing body is currently in the hunt for a new man following the departure of Avram Grant last month.

Appiah guided Ghana to a fourth finish at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, a year before leading the outfit to the Fifa World Cup in Brazil, where the Black Stars exited in the first round.

"I love Akwasi. I would support him a 100 per cent but I don't know what is wrong with Ghana," Kuffour was quoted as saying by Ghana Sports.

"Somehow, we tend to believe that the foreigner, the white person, is the right person to coach.

"No, I don't see it that way, I believe in the individual. You may get a white coach who is a master and I believe in this day and age, you may get a black coach who is also a master. You are lucky to have such a person in your country.

"Of course, you should pay the person as you would pay a white because it’s a global market as I have told you. Kwesi, I believe, will do exceptionally well.

"He is performing well in Sudan, so why shouldn't he come back to do it for us? I would support his coming back."

Appiah was sacked after the 2014 World Cup, and has since been in charge of Sudanese club Al Khartoum.

The 56-year-old has been widely speculated to land the job for the second time, amid calls for the appointment of a local man.

Former national stars Ibrahim Tanko, Otto Addo, and Abdul Razak have also been linked to the job.
