FIFPro backs FPAI’s stance on Indian Super League’s draft

The worldwide representative body of professional footballers has come out in support of the stand taken by FPAI…

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has claimed that it doesn’t recognise Football Players Association of India (FPAI) and the latter countered by stating that it doesn’t need the acknowledgement from AIFF or the Indian Super League (ISL).

On Friday evening, FIFPro too joined the discussion by stating that, “It fully supports moves by the Indian players union to make sure it is consulted by the Indian Super League over rules for next season.”

Last week the FPAI raised their concern that they ought to be consulted before the ISL opts for a draft system as opposed to a free market where the player can decide which club he wants to be a part of.

"It is imperative that the players – the stars of the Indian Super League – are able to negotiate their own working conditions,” FIFPro General Secretary Theo van Seggelen said.

We are in no way accountable to AIFF or the ISL - FPAI

"The Indian Super League cannot impose conditions to fit with its business model without consulting players,” he added.

The press release also mentioned: “Players are unhappy with a draft system because they could be moved on to a different club against their will and not have the right to negotiate their salary.

“The union also wants to discuss rules that restrict contracts to one year, impose quotas on the number of Indian players and fix a squad salary cap.”
