Could Fifa order a replay of the Bafana Bafana and Senegal match?

The world football's governing body, Fifa, could call for a replay of the 2018 World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Senegal.

Bafana Bafana beat the Lions of Teranga 2-1 in Polokwane last November, with Ghanaian referee Joseph Odartei Lamptey awarding a 'dubious' penalty to the hosts.

Lamptey has since been found guilty of manipulating match results by Fifa, who has handed him a lifetime ban after reviewing games he officiated since 2007.

Senegal Football Federation vice president Abdoulaye Sow has indicated Fifa will soon make a final decision regarding the game.

"All cheating and stealing in the game will be punished according to its gravity. Fifa has clearly struck a big blow and has promised in its decision to talk again about the match when the decision is final and binding," he said.

If Fifa concludes that the Bafana game itself was manipulated, Fifa could consider asking for a replay and this would not be the first time the organisation has called for replay of a competitive game.

In 2005, Fifa set a precedent when they ordered a replay of the 2006 World Cup qualifier between Asian countries Uzbekistan and Bahrain.

Nicknamed the White Wolves, Uzbekistan had defeated The Red of Bahrain 1-0 in the Asian zone play-off encounter first-leg clash.

The match had to be replayed after a refereeing mistake involving a penalty incident which had been awarded to Uzbekistan, who then called for an investigation.

But Fifa declared the result invalid and ordered a replay which angered Uzbekistan. Japanese referee Toshimitsu Yoshida, who officiated the game, was suspended at international level by the Asian Football Confederation.

The replay ended in a 1-1 draw in Uzbeskistan and ultimately, Bahrain won on away goals rule, following a goalless draw in the second-leg clash.
