FCSB v Sporting Lisbon Betting: Single goal could prove decisive in cagey showdown

The first leg of this tie ended without goals and our tipster is expecting another tight tussle when these teams meet in the Romanian capital

FCSB go into Wednesday’s crucial Champions League play-off second-leg against Sporting in Bucharest knowing that a home win will be enough to see them move into the group stages of the competition for the first time since 2013/14.

Despite having Mihai Pintilii sent off in the closing minutes of last week’s first-leg in the Portuguese capital, Viorel Tanase’s team clung on to claim a creditable goalless draw and the Romanian runners-up will feel that they are in the driving seat in their bid to reach the Champions League group stages.

Betsafe offer 16/5 (4.20) that FCSB, formerly known as Steaua Bucharest, progress with victory and 47/20 (3.35) that the match remains level at the end of 90 minutes – a selection that would have seen punters profit from five of the last eight matches that the Romanians have contested in all competitions this season.

Sporting have lost all three of their previous European ties on Romanian soil, but there is 24/25 (1.96) that Jorge Jesus’ side buck that trend by coming out on top in this one – and the Portuguese side certainly warmed up for this trip in superb style by easing to a fantastic 5-0 win against Vitoria Guimaraes in the league on Saturday.

FCSB will be pleased to have earned a share of the spoils in the first-leg of this tie, but a major concern for the hosts must be that they were unable to score a precious away goal in Portugal, for they have kept a clean sheet in just one of their last six home matches in all competitions – and a goal for Jesus’ side would mean that the Romanians would need to net at least twice to progress.

Betsafe go 97/100 (1.97) that there are goals at both ends in Bucharest, with 63/50 (2.26) that there are at least three goals scored when these teams renew their rivalry.

Another tight tussle, though, may well be a likely outcome, for FCSB have managed just one goal in each of the last three fixtures that they have contested on home soil, while Sporting have yet to concede a goal in competitive action this season with Jesus’ men recording four successive clean sheets.

Furthermore, nerves are sure to be jangling with both sides acutely aware of the importance of this fixture.

With that in mind, Betsafe’s 37/20 (2.85) quote for fewer than two goals to be scored could be a solid selection ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash in Bucharest.
