Malaysia were once again matched with the usual suspects after the draw for the 2018 AFC U-23 qualifiers were done in Asian Football Confederation (AFC) headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on Friday evening.
In the draw, Malaysia are pitted against Thailand, Indonesia and Mongolia in Group H. Ten groups are were drawn with countries all over Asia and one country will host all six matches involving the group.
This assignment for Frank Bernhardt should come in an opportune timing considering that he could only not have a crack at qualifying for the finals tournament but also provide him a chance to further mould his team for the upcoming SEA Games in August.
There could be possibility of new names being added to the squad what with this AFC tournament having one year higher age limit compared to the SEA Games. Considerations for a centralised camp in May has been mulled but as for now, there's now confirmation of that yet.
The group matches for Group H will be played in Thailand. The 10 group winners and five best runners-up qualify for the final tournament in China in 2018.
Malaysia kicks off their campaign in Group H against Indonesia on the 19 July 2017 with the match against Thailand on the 21 July before ending it against possibly the weakest of the group in Mongolia on the 23 July.
