Drogheda United sign former Ireland international Elliott

Drogheda United have completed the signing of former Republic of Ireland international Stephen Elliott.

The 33-year-old striker joins the Louth club having spent the majority of the 2016 season at Shelbourne and Pete Mahon is pleased with his new acquisition.

"Stephen will add to our attacking options and although he has played in the Premier League and has represented his country, he has succeeded my expectations as a player," said the Drogheda manager.

"He still has the hunger to score goals and he was very impressed with what he has seen at the club to date."

Elliott began his professional career at Manchester City, making just two appearances before joining Sunderland in 2004.

The Dublin native spent most of his career in Britain and counts Wolverhampton Wanderers, Preston North End, Hearts, Coventry City and Carlisle United among his former clubs.

He made nine appearances for Ireland during his career, scoring one goal - the winning goal against Cyprus in a qualification game for the 2006 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Drogheda have also secured the services of Thomas Byrne from Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 18-year-old Ireland youth international will provide competition for Elliott in attack as the Louth outfit attempt to retain their Premier Divisions status in 2017.

"Thomas is a player that has the ability to light up the league next season," said Pete Mahon.

"I have spoken with the coaching staff at Brighton and they couldn't speak highly enough about his footballing talents.

"We both agree that Thomas playing regular senior football with us will be of great benefit to him."
