Akwa Ibom 4-1 Bayelsa
Fortune High School, Akwa Ibom got their 2017 Copa Coca Cola regional finals to a winning start after pummeling Winners Academy, Bayelsa 4-1 on Tuesday at the Modern Secondary School, Port Harcourt.
A brace from Nwana Williams and one goal each from Nathaniel Bassey and Elijah Etoro ensured the Uyo boys begin their campaign on a very good note, while Favour Nimizigha’s consolation wasn’t enough to save his side from their opening day defeat.
Having played a goalless draw in the first half of the meeting, Nathaniel Bassey jabbed his side ahead few minutes into the second half, while Nwana Williams’ superb finish doubled his side’s lead.
The game continued with the boys from Bayelsa dangerously looking for an equalizer, but effort wasn’t good enough as they conceded the third goal via Elijah Etoro before Williams wrapped it up for the boys from Uyo.
Both sides had toiled all through the first half of the game with all their efforts going off targets or the waterlogged pitch slowing balls down from reaching its intended targets.
Enugu 2-0 Cross Rivers
Million Koma and Ikechukwu Onuoha powered New Layout Secondary School, Enugu to a 2-0 victory over Government Secondary School, Cross Rivers in the second match of the day in the Port Harcourt region.
Following their inability to find the net in the first half of the encounter, Million Koma broke the deadlock in the second half with a superb low flying header to put his side in the lead, and few minutes into the end of the game, Ikechukwu Onuoha’s thunderous shot sealed the game for the Coal City boys on Tuesday afternoon.
Both sides were impressive in the first half, but the Enugu boys seemed more purposeful with some of their chances hitting the cross bar, while others were saved by the goalkeeper.
Just like in the first game, the flow of the game was always intercepted after a light shower of rain waterlogged the pitch, but that was never an excuse as the boys from the Government Secondary School fought hard to get a consolation in that game, but all their efforts were not fruitful, but they will have to hope they can get their tourney to a winning start on Wednesday when they battle Owerri City School at the same venue.
