The PSL title race appears to be a three-horse race, with both Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United seemingly out of contention after their last weekend’s 2-2 draw at the Mbombela Stadium.
While the sides are mathematically still in the race, they will need the top three teams to drop points in order to stand any chance of winning the league title this season.
As things stand, only Mamelodi Sundowns, Cape Town City and Bidvest Wits have a realistic chance of being crowned champions with at least five league games to go.
Goal predicts the remaining matches for the three teams that are still in the title race.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS TITLE RUN-IN
Pitso Mosimane might consistently downplay his side’s chances of winning the league title this season, but they actually have the easiest run-in, with Orlando Pirates being the only team that can stop them in their remaining five games.
Firstly, Pirates are often get the better of Sundowns when it matters the most, and this being a must-win clash for both teams, football fans can expect a very close affair, but with Kjell Jonevret seeking a big result to put this poor season him, the Buccaneers could spoil the party and blow the title race wide open again.
Of course no one can predict the outcome of all the matches, especially at this stage of the season, but everyone expects the Brazilians to return to winning ways against Platinum Stars, get at least a result against the Sea Robbers and win their final three matches, but would that be enough for them to defend their crown?
04 May – vs Platinum Stars (My prediction: Sundowns to win)
07 May – vs Orlando Pirates (My prediction: Pirates to spoil the party!)
10 May – vs Baroka (My prediction: Sundowns to easily beat Baroka)
17 May – vs Maritzburg United (My prediction: A win for Sundowns)
27 May – vs Highlands Park (My prediction: Sundowns to win)
BIDVEST WITS TITLE RUN-IN
The Students have to face Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in their remaining five league matches, while they don’t have a good record against Free State Stars, who are fighting for their lives in the bottom half of the table.
Their win over Sundowns though, proved that they can beat any team at any given day, but will they replicate the same performance against a desperate Pirates side on Thursday?
Remember, Pirates also need the points to cement their place in the top eight, and Wits should work even harder to get something out of this game, especially with a few of their key players suspended for the encounter. They will also need to pull up their socks away to Ea Lla Koto and get the points against Chiefs on the last day of the season. A difficult mountain to climb for the Clever Boys.
04 May – vs Orlando Pirates (My prediction: Wits and Bucs to share the spoils)
07 May – vs Maritzburg United (My prediction: Wits to win)
10 May – vs Free State Stars (My predicition: Stars to hold Wits to a draw)
17 May – vs Polokwane City (My predicition: A win for Wits)
27 May – vs Kaizer Chiefs (My prediction: Chiefs to win)
CAPE TOWN CITY TITLE RUN-IN
Looking at the remaining league matches, Eric Tinkler’s men may have lost for the last time away to Maritzburg United on Monday. They have been able to get results away from home in the second round, and have not lost to any of their title rivals, meaning they stand a good chance against SuperSport United.
The Citizens have no reason to drop points against Free State Stars this coming Friday because they will be at home, and they need to dust themselves up after their 1-0 defeat to the Team of Choice.
Their final game of the season will be away to Polokwane City, who have done fairly well so far this term, and if their place in the top eight isn’t secured before that game, then Tinkler’s men should brace themselves for another tough afternoon out in the Limpopo province.
05 May – vs Free State Stars (My prediction: A win for Cape Town City)
09 May – vs SuperSport United (My prediction: A win for City)
17 May – vs Golden Arrows (My prediction: City to win comfortably)
27 May – vs Polokwane City (My prediction: Polokwane to hold City to a draw)
