Comitis: Cape Town City versus Ajax is not a Derby

The two sides meet at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, with the Urban Warriors now under Stanley Menzo, looking to avenge the 1-0 first round defeat

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis says for their clash with Ajax Cape Town to be considered a Cape Town Derby, his former club should be owned by people from the Mother City.

“Well, for it to be a derby both clubs have to be from Cape Town,” Comitis told the Daily Voice.

“We are here and they are there,” added the former Ajax CEO who left the club in 2013 following a long-standing battle with current Ajax CEO Ari Efstathiou.

The Citizens are flying high in the Premiership under the new owners, and considered as genuine contenders for this season's league title.

They already have a trophy in their cabinet after clinching the Telkom Knockout in December 2016.

After thumping Highlands Park 3-0 on Wednesday, Comitis believes they are ready to win all their remaining games to become the only team to win the PSL title at the first attempt.

“Ahead of the resumption of the league, we told the players if they want to win the league, they have to win the league 15 times (referring to the number of games left in the second half of the season)."

“We won on Tuesday and we have to win on Saturday. We see the league that way. If we win all our games, we win the league,” Comitis concluded.
