Columbus Crew sign Obinwa, acquire Martinez permanently

The pair of young midfielders will vie for playing time with Gregg Berhalter's side in 2017.

The Columbus Crew announced Wednesday that the club has signed midfielder Abuchi Obinwa and acquired midfielder Cristian Martinez on a permanent transfer following his 2016 loan to Columbus.

Obinwa joins from German side Hannover 96, where he played for the club's Under-19 team. The 20-year-old Columbus native has represented the U.S. at the U-18 and U-20 levels.

Martinez joined Columbus on loan in May from Chorrillo FC in his native Panama. The 19-year-old midfielder made seven appearances for the Crew in all competitions, and also played in eight matches on loan with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL. 

"We are excited to work with Abuchi and Cristian this year as they continue to develop as young players with potential," Crew coach Gregg Berhalter said in a news release. "We look forward to tracking their progress in their first preseason camps with us."
