Kenya was also scrapped off the 1996 Afcon hosting rights before it was awarded to South Africa. Chan is a tournament featured by players, who ply their trade in the respective local leagues on African continent. If the stadium works are completed in time Kenya will become only the fifth country to host the 16-team championships in January 2018.

The inaugural tournament was held in Ivory Coast in 2009 followed by Sudan, South Africa and Rwanda which hosted the last competition in 2016 won by defending champions the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
