Mohun Bagan made it three wins in a row in the Calcutta Football Lague as they thrashed Patha Chakra 5-1 in the game that took place today at the Mohun Bagan Ground.
Bayi Kamo ended up scoring four of the five Bagan goals as the Marines ran riot against a hapless Patha Chakra
Coach Shankarlal Chakraborty made three changes in the Bagan starting XI from the previous game. Azharuddin Mullick and Shilton Paul came back replacing Nikhil Kadam and Shibin Lal. Thanks to his goal in the last match against Railway FC, Shilton D’Silva got his maiden start for the team in place of Surchandra Singh.
The Mariners looked confident in their approach from the very beginning of the match. They dominated proceedings but conceded the first goal in the 14th minute against the run of play. Patha Chakra striker Nadong Bhutia netted in from a floating corner. The Bagan defenders were caught napping as an opportunistic Bhutia took advantage of the defensive lapse and tapped in from a handshaking distance.
The goal somewhat shook up the home side who thereafter upped their game by a notch. They launched a series of attacks with Ansumana Kromah and Stephane Bayi Kamo leading from the front. Liberian striker Kromah could have equalised in the 21st minute when he combined brilliantly with his strike partner Kamo and found himself one on one with the opponent goalkeeper, but his feeble attempt went straight to the Patha Chakra custodian.
Mohun Bagan restored parity in the 23rd minute when Bayi Kamo scored a brilliant long-range goal to bring relief to the home fans. Conceding a goal shattered the minnows’ confidence and they looked clueless. Bagan players, on the other hand, brimmed with confidence.
The Green and Maroons took the lead at the stroke of halftime. Chesterpaul Lyngdoh’s corner was met by Ricky inside the penalty box who intelligently forwarded a square pass to Bayi Kamo. The Ivory Coast forward received the ball, turned swiftly and found the back of the net with a brilliant shot.
In a desperate attempt to come back, Patha Chakra, in the second half, brought in foreign striker Joel Sunday in place of goal scorer Nadong Bhutia.
But Sunday’s inclusion didn’t make much of a difference and instead, Bagan further increased their goals tally to three and four thanks to brilliant strikes from Ansumana Kromah and Bayi Kamo respectively.
Bayi Kamo who remained a little off colour in the first two matches of CFL, answered his critics with a perfect hat-trick today.
Patha Chakra could have scored one more at the end of the game when they earned a penalty but Joel Sunday blazed effort over the crossbar.
Minutes before the end of regulation time, Kamo once again found the back of the net increasing his goal tally to four. It was a comprehensive performance from the former Aizawl FC forward.
Seconds before the final whistle, Patha Chakra saved some face by scoring their second goal. From a counter-attack, Joel Sunday found the back of the net.
