Brimah blames Ghana commitment for club woes

The goalkeeper says his decision to represent his country at the last Afcon left him with a price to pay

Ghana goalkeeper Razak Brimah says his dedication to the national team has been the cause of his troubles at Spanish second tier club Cordoba.

Although Ghana's No.1 between 2015 and 2017, the shot-stopper endured a rather turbulent club career last campaign, with things seemingly worsening upon his return from the Africa Cup of Nations in February.

Last season, the 30-year-old made only four league appearances, prompting calls for his exclusion from the Black Stars.

“A lot of people don’t know this but I did not play more at club level because I chose to play for Ghana,” Brimah told Citi FM.

“With the Afcon approaching, they told me clearly that if I was going, then they were bringing in a new goalkeeper.

“But I have always said that regardless of what happens, I will never turn my back against my nation. I will never do it.”

Brimah has finally had to pay for his inactivity at club level following his exclusion from Ghana's team for recent matches against Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA.

“My contract with them [Cordoba] has ended and I don’t think that I will be there next season,” Brimah added.

“There are a lot of things my manager is working on and I hope it's sorted out early so I know where to move to.”

Brimah made his Ghana debut against Turkey in 2013, and has gone on to play at the 2015 and 2017 Afcon tournaments.
