"It's been a hell of a ride," Boswell wrote on Twitter. "From my family to yours, thanks for the support along the way. We have moved back to Houston & started the next chapter of our lives. I am retired from playing professional soccer."

Boswell, 34, ends his career as one of the most decorated defenders in MLS history. The center back went undrafted in 2005, but earned a spot with D.C. United and immediately became a fixture with the Black-and-Red.

The following season, Boswell led D.C. United to a Supporters' Shield and was named the MLS Defender of the Year.

Overall, Boswell was named to the MLS Best XI twice, won the Supporters' Shield twice in his career, and also made two appearances in MLS Cup during his time in Houston.

Boswell also earned three caps with the U.S. national team during his career.
