Betting: Back star-studded Portugal to beat understrength Germany to Confederations Cup success

With Joachim Low electing to leave out most of his stars, Al Hain-Cole is backing the full-strength Selecao to lift the trophy in Russia this summer

With a number of star names missing from an experimental-looking squad, Germany do not seem like particularly worthy favourites at this summer's Confederations Cup.

Having openly criticised the competition only recently, manager Joachim Low has decided to use the opportunity to give his more established players a rest while trying out those with little international experience.

With the likes of Mats Hummels, Mesut Ozil and Thomas Muller replaced by Benjamin Henrichs, Kerem Demirbay and Lars Stindl, bet365's 2/1 (3.00) odds appear rather short on Die Mannschaft lifting the trophy for the first time in their history this year.

By contrast, Portugal look to be taking the tournament very seriously after arriving in Moscow with the majority of the players who led them to Euro 2016 glory, including inspirational captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Drawn in what appears to be the weaker of the two groups alongside Mexico 9/1 (10.00), Russia 9/1 (10.00) and New Zealand 500/1 (501.00), Fernando Santos’ team look like excellent value at 5/2 (3.50) to go all the way this summer.

Meanwhile, the Germans must first navigate a group that includes a Chile team that has won the Copa America twice in the last three years.

With Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal among their ranks, La Roja are sure to push the world champions all the way in the opening stage, and are actually second favourites at 9/4 (3.25) to win the entire competition.

The pair are joined in Group B by African champions Cameroon 20/1 (21.00) and Asian champions Australia 33/1 (34.00), neither of whom have performed particularly strongly in friendly encounters with teams from outside their respective continents.

Indeed, it is hard to see this Confederations Cup as anything other than a three-horse race, and one which Portugal certainly seem the best equipped to win.
