Huddersfield Town v Reading Betting: Solitary goal to settle Championship play-off final

With so much at stake, Al Hain-Cole expects the Terriers to contest a typically tense and low-scoring final against Jaap Stam's team at Wembley

Huddersfield Town and Reading will go head-to-head for a place in the Premier League when they meet at Wembley in Monday’s Championship play-off final.

Having upset the odds to follow up last season’s 19th place finish by making it to within one game of promotion, David Wagner’s team are 11/8 (2.38) favourites with bet365 to return to the top flight for the first time since 1972 with victory here.

However, the Royals were the best of the teams to miss out on automatic promotion after finishing the regular season in third place, and are available at 12/5 (3.40) to secure a play-off final victory at the fourth attempt after missing out in each of their three previous appearances.

Three of the sides’ combined four semi-final clashes resulted in draws, and you can get odds of 11/5 (3.20) on them taking this one in to extra-time after another deadlocked 90 minutes.

Although not the most glamorous fixture on the European football calendar, a minimum reward of £170 million worth of Premier League television money probably makes it the most lucrative for the winner.

With this in mind, it’s no surprise that the last few finals have been rather tense and cagey affairs, with just four goals scored within normal time in the last four editions.

This lack of attacking ambition has also been evident in both of the teams’ routes to Wembley this year, where only five goals have gone in across the four legs of their semi-finals.

Considering both encounters between the sides in the regular season saw just a single goal, all signs point to another low-scoring finale to the Championship season on Monday.

All in all, odds of 7/4 (2.75) look well worth the investment on a typically nervous final seeing no more than one goal scored between Huddersfield and Reading on Monday.
