Police have confirmed that there have been fatal casualties at the tourist landmark, leading clubs and players to condemn the suspected terrorist act

Many in the football world have extended their condolences to those killed in the Catalan city after a van ploughed through crowds on La Rambla on Thursday.

The thoroughfare is one of Barcelona's most famous landmarks, and is a hotspot for tourists from across the world.

But La Rambla was marked by tragedy when an unidentified individual crashed his vehicle into pedestrians, before fleeing the scene.

Catalan authorities have confirmed 13 deaths at the site, although there is as of yet no final count for those killed or hurt.

Barca star Lionel Messi was among the first players to respond, writing via his official Instagram page: "I want to send my condolences and all my support to the families and friends of the victims of the terrible attack in our beloved Barcelona.

"We are not going to give up. There are many more of us who want to live in a world of peace, without hate and where respect and tolerance are the bases of living together."

The Blaugrana condemned the deadly attack on Twitter, pledging solidarity with those affected.

"Our hearts ache due to the attack on our city. All of our strength and esteem for the victims, their families and the citizens of Barcelona," the statement read on social media.

Fellow Barcelona side Espanyol also registered their disbelief at events, writing "The most beautiful city in the world, we suffer for you and all Barcelona residents."

Messi and the two local teams were followed by a host of teams and players from across the world in registering their condolences, as the scale of the attack became evident.
